The Secret to Beating Back Pain? Walk This Way!

If your back’s been giving you grief, doing nothing isn’t the answer.

Low back pain is one of the most common things we see — and one of the most frustrating.

It can:

  • Linger for weeks
  • Flare up randomly
  • Come back just when you think it’s gone

Most people respond by:
👉 Resting more
👉 Moving less
👉 Avoiding the things that hurt

But here’s the reality:

Too little movement is often part of the problem — not the solution.

Why Walking Works (Backed by Research)

Walking might seem too simple to make a difference — but the evidence says otherwise.

A major 2024 study (The WalkBack Trial) found that people who followed a structured, progressive walking program had:

  • Fewer back pain flare-ups
  • Longer pain-free periods
  • Better overall function

Compared to those who didn’t.

Why walking helps:

  • Builds strength through your core and lower back
  • Improves posture and movement patterns
  • Increases blood flow to healing tissues
  • Reduces stiffness and muscle tension

Simple, consistent movement = better outcomes.

Want to Take It Further? Try Walking Backwards

Sounds strange — but it works.

Retro-walking (walking backwards) is gaining traction as a powerful tool for chronic low back pain.

Research shows adding it into rehab can improve:

  • Pain levels
  • Flexibility
  • Overall function

Why Backwards Walking Helps

Retro-walking changes how your body loads and moves.

It:

  • Reduces strain on the lower back and joints
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Increases flexibility (especially hamstrings and lower back)
  • Activates different stabilising muscles

👉 In short: it challenges your system in a way forward walking doesn’t.

How to Start Using Walking for Your Back

You don’t need to overcomplicate it.

For Prevention & General Health:

  • Aim for 30 minutes of walking, 4–5x per week
  • Vary your terrain (flat, incline, outdoor)
  • Stay relaxed — don’t overthink your posture

If You’ve Got Back Pain:

  • Start small and build gradually
  • Keep movement comfortable — not forced
  • Stay consistent rather than going too hard

Adding Retro-Walking:

  • Start with 5–10 minutes on a treadmill or flat surface
  • Go slow — this isn’t a race
  • Build confidence before increasing speed or time

A Quick Reality Check

Walking is powerful — but it’s not a complete rehab plan on its own.

  • Strength deficits
  • Load management issues
  • Movement patterns that need correcting

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Kyle was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He saw me through my second pregnancy and continued to work with me until 6 months post partum on issues with my back. Would recommend anyone to go and see him.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
