Exercise right week is a great opportunity to take the time to understand

Australia is reported to have one of the largest increases in aging populations in the world. Unfortunately that means we have some major health issues arising in our communities! You can read more on that here!

Exercise Right Week is the perfect opportunity to learn why exercise is as important as breathing in air when it comes to sustaining a healthy life.

Australia has one of the largest aging populations in the world. With an
increasing aging population there comes some major health issues that are

What are Australia’s major Health Concerns?

Aussies are currently very inactive and sedentary in nature. This is it not improving despite everyone knowing that exercise and physical activity is important.

A whopping 55% of Australians are not reaching basic physical activity guidelines.

What’s worse is we see inactivity increase significantly as people age, currently only 17.2% of people over the age of 65 meet the basic requirements.

But why does that even matter?

Physical inactivity is a direct link to developing chronic health conditions and reduces quality of life significantly.

Over 50% of of Australians suffer from at least one chronic health condition, such as arthritis, asthma, back pain, cancer, cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Whats even worse, is that 23% of Aussies have two or more co-morbid health conditions, yet we just keep stacking them up like pancakes at breakfast!

Chronic diseases are a direct link to reduced quality of life, and currently 7 out of 10 deaths in Australia are attributed to them. When you look at those statistics, it is scary!

Exercise is the key to prevention and management of chronic diseases. Sticking to the Australian guidelines for exercise (30minute of moderate intensity exercise a day) has been shown to greatly reduce mortality and development of comorbid chronic health conditions and increase quality of life as we age.

I think its good to take a look away from the big bad stats of chronic disease and look at what exercising right can do for you by understanding what improved quality of life really means.

We know exercise reduces our chance of early death but, did you know exercise also allows you to live the best possible life we can.

“Exercise adds life to years, not just years to life!”

Here are some things I have found in my time as an Exercise Physiologist working at Fighting Fit Physiotherapy about exercising right and improving peoples quality of life. 

1.     Achieving Personal goals

  • Increasing quality of life means working towards and achieving personal goals. You know all those great things you want to achieve and do in life. Well, exercise can give you even more then you thought possible.

  • Exercise is an amazing tool to build health, resilience, strength, power and capacity to do more in a day.

  • Exercise to the everyday person should be thought about like an athlete going to training each day to compete, except you are training to compete in life and be rewarded through the experiences you can live as a result.

  • No training, no result! No exercise, no reward! 

2.    Mental health

  • Another extremely underappreciated benefit to exercise is the effects it has on our mental health.

  • Mental health issues are a growing part of society and greatly impacts our quality of life in all aspects such as work, our personal lives, and the activities we do day to day. Mental health issues increase our likelihood of death and risk of developing other chronic health conditions.

  • New studies are beginning to suggest exercise has as much effect if not more effect, then medications and in combination with psychotherapy produce greater results then on it’s own.

  • Exercise produces hormones that stimulate the brain and body to feel good. Engaging in and completing exercise also activates reward pathways within the brain responsible for improving mental health for depression and anxiety sufferers.

  • This is why we promote exercise to better manage both our physical and mental health for a better life at Fighting Fit.

3.     Social connection 

  • Social connections have been shown to help with mental health, feeling of purpose with exercise and activities, and studies have even shown that exercise that has a social aspect is much easier to adhere to over long periods of time.

  • Social environments are very important as humans. So it would make sense that social exercise such as walking groups, gyms and group classes that foster a positive social environment are better than going it alone. 

Humans are social creatures, so its no wonder that people who exercise find they have better social, mental and physical health then others who don’t. 

How do I exercise right?

Personally, I’m a big believer that any exercise is better than none.

However, we do have access to vast amount of information on social media and the internet. With all this information at out fingertips it’s become an issue of over information, misinformation and fad marketing being spread around about how to manage our health with exercise. 

We all know why exercise is important, but the above is creating a sense of confusion and paralysis for people of when, where and how to start or what is right for us. 

Exercise Physiologists have spent 4 years at university learning to develop exercise plans for any health condition. We take on an evidence-based approach, which means we merge science and what works to get you the best results for you.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Kyle was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He saw me through my second pregnancy and continued to work with me until 6 months post partum on issues with my back. Would recommend anyone to go and see him.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
