Why Does My Hip Keep “Snapping”? (And How Physio Can Fix It)

Clicking. Popping. Snapping.

If your hip makes noise every time you walk, stand up, or train — you’re not imagining it.

A snapping or clicking hip is surprisingly common. Research shows up to 1 in 10 people experience it at some point, and many have no pain at all.

But when that snap becomes uncomfortable, annoying, or starts limiting your training or daily life, it’s worth addressing — and in most cases, physio can settle it without surgery.

What Is Snapping Hip Syndrome?

Snapping Hip Syndrome happens when a structure around the hip moves over a bony point and creates a noticeable snap, click, or pop.

There are a few different reasons this can happen — and knowing which one you have is the key to fixing it properly.

The 3 Main Types of Snapping Hip

1. Snapping on the Outside of the Hip (Most Common)

This is the type most people notice first.

A tight band of tissue — usually the iliotibial band (ITB) or part of the gluteus maximus — flicks over the outside of the hip bone.

People often describe it as:

  • “It feels like my hip is popping out.”
  • “It snaps every time I move my leg out to the side.”

Over time, this repeated friction can irritate the area and sometimes lead to bursitis, which is when pain enters the picture.

2. Snapping at the Front of the Hip

This type comes from the hip flexor tendon (iliopsoas) moving over the front of the hip joint.

It’s often described as:

  • A deep click or clunk at the front of the hip
  • A feeling of the hip catching or briefly getting stuck

Because it’s felt deep in the joint, this type is sometimes confused with more serious hip problems — which is why proper assessment matters.

3. Snapping Inside the Hip Joint

Less common, but still possible.

This snap comes from inside the joint and may be related to:

  • A small cartilage tear (labrum)
  • Loose fragments within the joint

It often feels less predictable — more like a random click or catch rather than a repeatable snap.

Why Does Snapping Hip Happen?

Snapping hips aren’t caused by just one thing. Research points to a mix of factors, including:

  • Tight muscles or tendons
  • Muscles that don’t relax properly
  • Muscle imbalances (often glutes not pulling their weight)
  • Repetitive movements — running, dance, soccer, gym training
  • Normal anatomical differences

And importantly — some hips snap without pain, and that’s completely okay. Noise alone isn’t a problem. Pain and limitation are.

How Physios Work Out What’s Causing Your Snap

This is where a proper assessment makes all the difference.

Physios combine:

  • Your description of where you feel the snap
  • Observation of how you walk, squat, and move
  • Strength and flexibility testing
  • Specific movements to reproduce the snap

Most people can point to the exact spot with one finger — and that information is incredibly useful for narrowing down the cause.

How Physiotherapy Treats Snapping Hip

The good news?
Most people improve with conservative treatment — no surgery required.

Here’s what physio focuses on:

1. Improving Mobility Where It’s Needed

If tight tissue is driving the snap, we work on gradually restoring length and smooth movement — not aggressive stretching that just irritates things further.

2. Teaching Muscles to Relax (Not Just Work Harder)

Sometimes the issue isn’t tightness — it’s muscles that won’t switch off. Physio retrains how your hip muscles activate so they glide smoothly instead of snapping.

3. Strengthening the Right Muscles

Weak or underactive glutes — especially glute med — are commonly linked to snapping at the front and side of the hip. Strengthening the right muscles reduces strain on the irritated tissue.

4. Modifying Irritating Movements

This might mean:

  • Tweaking gym or running technique
  • Temporarily reducing repetitive hip movements
  • Adjusting training loads

It’s about keeping you moving — not shutting everything down.

5. Settling Pain and Inflammation

When irritation is present, physio may use strategies like:

  • Activity modification
  • Ice or load management
  • Anti-inflammatory approaches
  • In some cases, referral for a corticosteroid injection into an irritated bursa

How Long Does Recovery Take?

With consistent physio and movement retraining, most people return to comfortable, confident hip function within 6–12 months — often much sooner.

When Is Surgery Needed?

Almost never.

Surgery is only considered when:

  • Pain is ongoing, and
  • All conservative options have been properly trialled

Even then, surgery comes with risks — including hip flexor weakness — which is why physio is always the first line of treatment.

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.
