Soccer – Don’t be sidelined by Sporting Injuries!

The most common injuries seen in Soccer players!

Soccer is a fast growing sport in Australia.

The number of participants has increased by over 250,000 in the last decade, growing to 1.7 Million nationwide participants within Australia. 

That is almost double that of Aussie rules and triple that of cricket. With this number of participants, soccer is by far the biggest sport in Australia. 

That is why today we need to address the three of the more common soccer injuries, how to prevent them and how to treat them. Or too many people will be lost to injury and we don’t want that!

  1. Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains are among the most prevalent soccer injuries. A sprain occurs when ligaments, the tough bands connecting bones together, are stretched or slightly torn.  Strains can also involve the stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. 

Soccer players are particularly susceptible to these injuries due to sudden and rapid changes in direction, quick acceleration and deceleration. 

The most common  sprains in soccer include 

  • Ankle sprains
  • Hamstring strains
  • Groin strains
  • Knee ligament strains

Prevention of Sprains and Strains in soccer players

Here are some great tips and hacks to reduce injury in soccer players. 

  • Incorporating dynamic warm-up routines to ready the body for training or games
  • Gym and strength training to help prepare the body for the intensive training and competition
  • Flexibility exercises to ensure muscles are long and strong will reduce likelihood of muscle strains. 
  • Players should also ensure they are using proper technique during movements on the field

Rehabilitation 

The first step is call the POLICE 

Jokes P.O.L.I.C.E. actually stands for: 

Protect from further injury 

Optimise for recovery

Load appropriately 

Ice for analgesia

Compression and

Elevate the injury to assist with swelling

Our Fighting Fit Physiotherapy team will then assess, diagnose and grade the injury to make sure that the tissue that is sprained, strained or torn will heal optimally.

We will provide a detailed treatment plan based on our diagnosis and provide a graded exercise program to regain strength, mobility and stability in the affected area to make sure you can return to sport safely.

Ensuring proper loading of the structures as they heal will you can return to the pitch fit and ready to go in the shortest period of time

  1. ACL Tears

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is crucial for stabilizing the knee joint.

ACL tears are a severe injury often caused by sudden stops, changes in direction, or direct impact to the knee.

Female soccer players are at a higher risk of ACL tears compared to their male counterparts.

Prevention of ACL tears 

Here are some of the best things you can do as a soccer player to prevent ACL tears: 

  • Making sure all the muscles around the knee are strong by training in the gym or at home with and adequate training program for the legs
  • Train for agility and landing techniques when jumping, having good technique and control will prevent injuries
  • Make sure you are wearing the right footwear. Proper footwear will ensure you have good grip while running, twisting and turning. Without good grip the chances of injuries are much higher

Rehabilitation 

Surgical intervention is common for ACL tears, however surgical Intervention is not always necessary.

With the right rehab and training the knee can be fully functional without surgery depending on the level of competition and the requirements of the sport.

Either way, extensive rehabilitation to regain strength, stability, and range of motion is paramount for successful return to play following an ACL injury.

ACL Reco 

  1. Concussions

Head injuries, particularly concussions, are a growing concern in soccer. Collisions, head-to-head contact, or falls can lead to concussions, impact the brain’s function.

Prevention 

Proper heading technique, and strict enforcement of rules regarding dangerous play contribute to concussion prevention.

Head knocks can be reduced through good technique in tackles, one to one play and ensuring reckless efforts are limited will reduce the likelihood of a concussion being sustained. 

Rehabilitation 

Rest is crucial following a concussion.

Gradual return to activity, both physical and cognitive, should be guided by us.

Our Physiotherapists will help guide you in the process and offer techniques to help relieve symptoms of concussions.

While soccer injuries are an inevitable part of the game, players can take proactive measures to reduce the risk and enhance their overall well-being. Proper conditioning, adherence to training techniques, and a focus on injury prevention can go a long way in ensuring a long and fulfilling soccer career.

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.
