Shoulder Pain? Physiotherapy Can Help You Move Better and Feel Stronger

If your shoulder’s been nagging — it’s not something you have to put up with.

Shoulder pain has a way of creeping into everything:

  • Reaching into a cupboard
  • Lifting at the gym

The right physio approach doesn’t just reduce pain — it actually fixes the problem long-term.

Why Physiotherapy Works (And What the Research Says)

One of the biggest studies on shoulder pain — the GRASP Trial (700+ participants) — looked at different treatment approaches for rotator cuff–related shoulder pain.

They compared:

  • Structured physiotherapy exercise
  • A one-off advice session
  • Both options with or without a cortisone injection

Here’s what matters:

  • Exercise-based physio delivered the best long-term results
  • Cortisone injections helped short-term (around 8 weeks)
  • But injections didn’t improve long-term outcomes

👉 Translation:
If you want lasting change — strength, confidence, and pain-free movement — exercise is the key.

Not rest. Not passive treatment. Not quick fixes.

What Good Shoulder Rehab Actually Looks Like

At Fighting Fit, shoulder rehab isn’t random exercises — it’s targeted work that restores how your shoulder should move.

Research shows the most effective programs focus on the muscles that control your shoulder blade and joint.

Key movements we use include:

Building Upper Back Control

Lifting your arms out to the side (like a “T” position) helps activate the muscles that support posture and shoulder stability.

Strengthening Your Pulling Muscles

Rowing movements train the middle back and improve shoulder blade control — crucial for both gym performance and everyday movement.

Activating the Serratus (Often Missed)

Forward reaching or “punching” movements wake up a key muscle that keeps your shoulder moving smoothly and reduces overload on other structures.

Improving Overhead Strength

Targeted overhead work helps build strength through the lower shoulder blade muscles — especially important if you sit a lot or train overhead.

Why This Matters

Most shoulder pain we see comes down to:

  • Poor muscle balance
  • Weakness in key stabilisers
  • Overloading the wrong structures

Simply resting or stretching might ease symptoms short-term — but it doesn’t fix the underlying issue.

That’s why pain keeps coming back.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
