A guide to support women suffering Endometriosis

If you have endometriosis or maybe think you have this condition, check out this blog to understand what millions of women need to understand and do about this often debilitating condition. 

Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting millions of women worldwide, characterized by the growth of tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) outside the uterus.

This tissue can be found on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other organs within the pelvis.

Endometriosis can cause significant pain, particularly during menstruation, but its impact extends beyond just physical discomfort.

Understanding Endometriosis 

The symptoms of endometriosis can vary widely but commonly include:

  • severe menstrual cramps
  • chronic pelvic pain
  • pain during intercourse
  • pain with bowel movements or urination

In some cases, women may also experience fatigue, infertility, and digestive issues. 

The severity of symptoms doesn’t always correlate with the extent of the disease; some women with extensive endometriosis may have mild symptoms, while others with less severe disease may experience significant discomfort.

Impact on Daily Life

Endometriosis can profoundly affect a woman’s quality of life. The chronic pain and fatigue can interfere with daily activities, work, and social interactions. The unpredictable nature of symptoms can lead to emotional stress, anxiety, and even depression. 

For those also struggling with infertility, the emotional burden can be particularly heavy. Managing endometriosis often requires a multi-faceted approach, and physiotherapy can be a valuable component in alleviating symptoms and improving overall well-being.

 

Here is what to do. 

Physiotherapy Assessment 

As physiotherapists, our first step is a comprehensive assessment to understand how endometriosis is impacting a woman’s life.

This involves a detailed history of symptoms, an evaluation of pain levels, and an assessment of physical function and posture.

We also consider how endometriosis may be affecting pelvic floor function, as this can play a significant role in pain and discomfort.

By understanding the full scope of the condition, we can tailor a treatment plan that

addresses both the physical and emotional aspects of living with endometriosis.

  1. Pain Management: Techniques such as heat therapy, ultrasound, and TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) can help alleviate pain. Gentle stretching and relaxation exercises are also incorporated to ease muscle tension.
  2. Pelvic Floor Therapy: Since endometriosis can impact the pelvic floor muscles, we offer specialized exercises to strengthen and relax these muscles. Improving pelvic floor function can reduce pain and enhance overall pelvic health
  3. Core Strengthening: Addressing posture and core stability can help relieve stress on the pelvic area. We guide women through exercises to improve alignment, support the lower back, and reduce overall strain.
  4. Education and Self-care: Providing education on managing symptoms, including stress management techniques and lifestyle adjustments, is essential. We offer guidance on diet, hydration, and stress-reducing practices that will complement physical therapy.
  5. Emotional Support: Living with a chronic condition like endometriosis can be emotionally challenging. We provide a supportive environment to discuss concerns and offer resources for additional support if needed.

Moving Forward

Endometriosis is a complex condition with a wide range of symptoms and impacts, but with the right support and treatment, women can manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. 

Physiotherapy offers a holistic approach to care, addressing both physical and emotional aspects of the condition.

Karolina Bejmert

Karolina is Polish-Canadian who moved to Australia in 2022 to live her dream and study physiotherapy.

She graduated from Bond University in June 2024.

Before that she studied at Queen’s University where she got her bachelor oof science specializing in Kinesiology.

With almost 5 years of experience working as a sports trainer in various sports and the Royal Military College of Canada.

Karolina enjoys the simple pleasures in life – reading, painting, hiking and travel. She is a player of many sports (but a master of none according toher) including American football, volleyball and rowing.

Karolina is overjoyed to be starting her career at Fighting Fit and we are excited for what the future has in store!

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Kyle was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He saw me through my second pregnancy and continued to work with me until 6 months post partum on issues with my back. Would recommend anyone to go and see him.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
