Eat to Burn: Why Eating Enough is Key to Fat Loss and Efficient Metabolism

Working harder, eating less, and still not seeing results?

It’s one of the most frustrating things we see.

Someone starts a fat-loss journey, cuts calories, trains harder, and does everything they think they’re supposed to do.

At first, things move.

Then suddenly:

  • Weight loss stalls
  • Energy drops
  • Recovery gets worse
  • Cravings increase
  • Training performance falls off

The natural response?

👉 Eat even less.

Unfortunately, that’s often the exact thing making the problem worse.

Your Body Doesn't Like Starvation

Despite what social media might tell you, your body is incredibly smart.

When it senses a long-term shortage of energy, it starts making adjustments to protect itself.

That means:

  • Slowing metabolism
  • Reducing daily movement
  • Increasing hunger signals
  • Preserving energy wherever possible

The result?

You end up burning fewer calories than before, despite eating less.

Why Fat Loss Isn't Just About Eating Less

Successful fat loss comes down to creating a calorie deficit.

But there’s a big difference between a sensible deficit and an aggressive one.

When calories are cut too far for too long, the body starts adapting.

You may notice:

  • Constant fatigue
  • Reduced gym performance
  • Poor recovery
  • Loss of strength
  • Difficulty maintaining muscle mass

And ironically, fat loss often becomes harder.

The Hidden Role of Your Metabolism

One of the ways we assess metabolic function is through something called the Respiratory Exchange Ratio (RER).

In simple terms, RER tells us what fuel source your body prefers to use.

A lower RER means your body is efficiently using fat as fuel.

A higher RER means you’re relying more heavily on carbohydrates.

When people chronically underfuel, their metabolism often becomes less efficient and their ability to utilise fat can be reduced.

This is one reason why simply eating less isn’t always the answer.

Why Knowing Your TDEE Matters

Your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total amount of energy your body burns each day.

This includes:

  • Basic bodily functions
  • Daily movement
  • Exercise
  • Digestion

Many people have no idea what their actual energy requirements are.

Instead, they rely on:

  • Online calculators
  • Generic meal plans
  • Social media advice

The problem?

Those estimates don’t account for your individual metabolism, activity levels, training load, or body composition.

Sometimes You Need to Eat More to Lose Fat

This is where a lot of people get stuck.

If you’ve been dieting aggressively for months, your body may need more fuel before it can perform, recover, and burn energy effectively again.

That doesn’t mean eating everything in sight.

It means providing your body with enough energy to:

  • Maintain muscle mass
  • Support training
  • Recover properly
  • Keep metabolism functioning well

Fat loss works best when your body feels supported—not starved.

Stop Guessing

The most successful fat-loss plans aren’t built on extremes.

They’re built on data.

Understanding:

  • Your metabolic rate
  • Your daily energy needs
  • Your training demands

allows you to make decisions based on facts rather than frustration.

The Takeaway

If you’re training hard, eating well, and still not seeing results, the answer might not be to cut more calories.

In many cases, the problem isn’t that you’re eating too much.

It’s that you’ve been eating too little for too long.

The goal isn’t to eat less.

The goal is to fuel your body properly so it can perform, recover, and burn fat efficiently.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Kyle was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He saw me through my second pregnancy and continued to work with me until 6 months post partum on issues with my back. Would recommend anyone to go and see him.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
