The Importance of Metabolic Testing for Athletes at All Levels

Metabolic Testing: This is a must-read for any athlete wanting to improve their performance!

Whether you are an athlete at an elite level or someone who enjoys participating in recreational sport, performance testing will help you understand your body, make better training choices as you can focus your time on what exactly is needed to improve your performance in sport.

Testing ensures you are getting the most out of each training session and working smarter not harder.

RMR or your VO2 max are two tests that will significantly improve your training and competition performance.

Let’s dive into them and what they do!

The RMR test!

Metabolic Testing

An RMR test or Resting Metabolic Rate Test measures how many calories and the type of fuels (fats/carbs) your body needs to consume at rest.

It is paramount as an athlete to adequately fuel your body for rest periods to ensure you are recovering and adapting to your training stimulus.

Recovering sufficiently will better allow you to tolerate the levels of stress associated with high or repeated training loads.

Having information on your RMR ensures you do not eat less than your RMR and impair recovery and adaptation to training.

Every athlete needs to know this!

If you don’t you’re probably not getting the right type or amount of fuel into you to get the recover from training.

If you are experiencing:

  • Fatiguing early in training
  • Elevated heart rates at rest/recovery and during exercise
  • Losing body mass
  • Getting injured with lots of soft tissue complaints
  • Not refreshed and ready for the next session

You are probably under fuelling yourself and need to better understand your metabolism.

Afterall, we can work as hard as we possibly can during training sessions, however if we don’t know how much we need to fuel and refuel our bodies to perform we will never get the results we desire as our body will just break down.

The VO2 Max Test!

Metabolic Testing

Many just think a VO2 max test is the gold standard for determining cardio-respiratory fitness.

I am going to show you how much more it is then that!

VO2max is a maximal test usually performed on the treadmill or the bike ergometer and measures an athlete’s maximum oxygen carrying capacity.

It is important to understand that each athlete is different and will all perform differently even within the same sport.

We all have the same parts as humans, but our physiology or how our body produces energy to move and perform at our peak is highly variable from person to person.

That’s why no two athletes can be treated the same in terms of programming with strength and conditioning coaching.

The VO2max test will show you how your heart rate zones which is an insight into how your individual physiology is working to produce the energy required to move and perform.

This is particularly important for athletes required to be conditioned to working within a specific zone for their chosen sport.

Upon completion of your VO2 max test you will also have access to the caloric requirements of working in these heart rate zones. You will understand exactly what fuel source (fats or carbs) are being used and how many calories you are burning through during exercise.

This is extremely useful to ensure you are correctly fueling before and during as well as re-fueling directly after for adequate recovery!

This information is vital and often the key to an athlete taking the next step forward in performance.

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
