“You’re So Flexible!” — Why Hypermobility Is More Than Just a Party Trick

  • October 7, 2026
  • Kyle Wells

Ever been the person who can bend their thumb back toward their wrist and gross everyone out?

Or maybe you’ve spent your whole life being told:

“You’re soooo flexible!”

For plenty of people, that’s exactly what it is — flexibility.

No pain. No problems. Just a cool party trick.

But for others, being hypermobile can come with joint pain, repeated injuries, fatigue or that frustrating feeling that certain joints just don’t feel as controlled as they should.

And they may have absolutely no idea the two are connected.

Let’s break it down.

So, What Actually Is Hypermobility?

Hypermobility simply means a joint can move beyond the range we typically expect.

Some people are hypermobile in one or two joints.

Others have increased movement throughout much of their body.

And here’s the really important part:

Hypermobility itself isn’t necessarily a problem.

Plenty of people are naturally hypermobile and experience absolutely no pain or limitations.

For some sports and activities — think gymnastics, dance and certain martial arts — having more range can even be useful.

Problems arise when that extra movement is accompanied by symptoms.

There are also different terms you might come across.

Generalised Joint Hypermobility (GJH)

This describes increased joint mobility across multiple areas of the body.

It doesn’t automatically mean you have a disorder or that something is wrong.

Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder (HSD)

HSD may be diagnosed when joint hypermobility is associated with musculoskeletal symptoms or other difficulties that aren’t better explained by another condition.

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

hEDS is a heritable connective tissue disorder associated with generalised joint hypermobility and other features.

Diagnosis is more involved than simply being very flexible and requires specific clinical criteria.

So being able to touch your thumb to your forearm doesn’t automatically mean you have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

That’s an important distinction.

How Do You Know If You're Hypermobile?

One screening tool commonly used is called the Beighton Score.

It looks at five movements and gives you a score out of nine.

It checks whether you can:

  • Bend your little finger backwards beyond 90 degrees — one point each side
  • Bring your thumb toward your forearm — one point each side
  • Hyperextend your elbow beyond a specified range — one point each side
  • Hyperextend your knee beyond a specified range — one point each side
  • Place your palms flat on the floor with your knees straight — one point

But here’s where things get important.

The Beighton Score isn’t a diagnosis.

The cutoff used to identify generalised joint hypermobility can differ depending on factors such as age, and the score only assesses certain joints.

You could score highly and have absolutely no symptoms.

Or you might have problematic hypermobility in joints that aren’t even included in the Beighton Score.

That’s why we don’t look at one number and say:

“Yep. That’s your problem.”

We look at the whole person.

“But I've Always Been Flexible — Surely That's a Good Thing?”

It can be.

Flexible doesn’t automatically mean injured, weak or unstable.

But some people with symptomatic hypermobility can have difficulty controlling their available range, particularly during demanding or repetitive activities.

That’s where strength and control become important.

Think about having a massive amount of movement available at a joint.

Having that range isn’t necessarily the problem.

The question is:

Can you control it?

Can you produce force through it?

Can you repeatedly tolerate load through it?

Can you do those things when you’re tired?

For people experiencing problems related to hypermobility, building those abilities can become a major part of rehabilitation.

What Does Symptomatic Hypermobility Feel Like?

Everyone presents differently, but some people may experience:

  • Recurring joint pain
  • Repeated sprains or soft-tissue injuries
  • Joints that feel like they’re giving way
  • Clicking or clunking
  • Recurrent subluxations or dislocations
  • Difficulty controlling certain movements
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced tolerance to prolonged or repetitive activity

But none of these symptoms automatically means:

“You have hypermobility.”

They can occur for plenty of other reasons too.

That’s why assessment matters.

Why Can Hypermobility Be Missed?

Because being flexible isn’t automatically something a person thinks to mention when they seek help for pain.

You might come in because your:

  • Shoulder keeps hurting
  • Ankle repeatedly rolls
  • Knee feels unstable
  • Back gets sore
  • Hip keeps causing problems

If we only assess the painful joint and never look at the bigger picture, we can potentially miss useful information about how you move and what your body needs.

At Fighting Fit, we’re not interested in just finding the sore spot.

We want to know:

Why is it struggling?

What Can You Actually Do About It?

Here’s the good news.

If hypermobility is contributing to your symptoms, there are plenty of things we can work on.

And the answer usually isn’t:

“Stop moving because your joints are too loose.”

We want you moving.

We just want to build the physical capacity and confidence to use the range you’ve got.

That may include:

💪 Strength Training

Building strength around the joints so you’re better able to produce and control force.

And no, this doesn’t necessarily mean tiny rehab exercises forever.

Depending on your starting point and goals, we want to progressively challenge you.

🎯 Proprioception and Movement Control

Proprioception is your body’s ability to sense where it is in space.

Exercises can be used to challenge balance, coordination and control in positions that are relevant to your symptoms and activities.

📈 Load Management

Sometimes the problem isn’t movement.

It’s the amount of movement or load your body is currently being asked to tolerate.

We can modify that temporarily, then gradually build your capacity back up.

🏋️ Training for Your Actual Life

This is the big one.

Your rehab needs to match what you want to do.

If you’re trying to get back to running, your body needs to tolerate running.

If you’re a gymnast, your rehab needs to prepare you for gymnastics.

If you want to lift heavy in the gym, eventually we need to prepare you to lift heavy.

And if your goal is keeping up with the kids without everything hurting?

We train for that too.

You Don't Need to Fear Your Flexibility

Being hypermobile doesn’t mean you’re damaged.

And it doesn’t mean you need to spend your life protecting your joints from movement.

For plenty of people, hypermobility causes no problems whatsoever.

For those who do experience symptoms, the answer is often about understanding your body and progressively building the strength, control and capacity required for the things you want to do.

We don’t want to take your movement away.

We want to make you stronger within it.

Think Your Flexibility Might Be More Than a Party Trick?

If you’ve always been the flexible one but you’re also dealing with recurring joint pain, repeated injuries or joints that don’t feel as controlled as you’d like, it’s worth getting properly assessed.

At Fighting Fit Physiotherapy, we’ll look beyond the sore spot, assess how you move and work out whether hypermobility may be relevant to what’s going on.

Then we’ll build a plan around your body, your symptoms and your goals.

👉 Book in with the Fighting Fit team and let’s turn all that movement into strength and control.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise. I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Fighting Fit Physiotherapy is hands down the best physio I've encountered. Having tried multiple physios for various injuries, I always find myself coming back to them. Their expertise consistently exceeds expectations, helping me get back to my sport faster than I thought possible. Their personalized approach and attention to detail make all the difference. I could not recommend a better or more exceptional physio team!

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP. As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team. The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries. During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule. All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
