The Real Reason You’re Crashing: And It’s Got Nothing to Do With Suspension or Track Conditions

  • September 30, 2026
  • Sam Pelz

Every rider has said it before:

“The track was rough.”

“My suspension was off.”

“The bike just didn’t feel right.”

And yeah — those things absolutely affect how you ride.

But there’s another part of the equation riders often overlook when they’re fading late in motos, making mistakes or struggling to hold their usual pace.

Their body.

Motocross places massive physical demands on you.

You’re controlling a 100kg+ machine underneath you, absorbing repeated impacts, reacting at speed and making split-second decisions — all while your heart rate is through the roof.

And as fatigue builds?

Your ability to keep doing all of that can start falling apart.

Fatigue Changes Everything

Early in a race, you’re on.

You’re flying.

You’re hitting your lines.

Your legs feel strong.

The bike feels good underneath you.

Then fatigue starts creeping in.

Your legs aren’t gripping the bike as effectively.

You start relying more on your upper body.

Your grip gets tighter.

Arm pump starts building.

Your riding position changes.

Your reactions don’t feel as sharp.

Suddenly you’re hanging off the handlebars, blowing through corners and wondering how the hell you’re going to finish the moto.

This is where fatigue becomes more than just:

“I’m tired.”

When you’re physically cooked, maintaining good technique, control and decision-making becomes harder.

And in a sport where tiny mistakes can have pretty significant consequences, that matters.

Strength Is Your Foundation

Strength matters in motocross more than a lot of riders realise.

Strong legs help you control the bike, absorb repeated impacts and maintain your position through braking bumps and rough sections.

A strong trunk helps you stay controlled on the bike instead of getting thrown around every time the track deteriorates.

Upper-body strength helps you control the handlebars without asking your forearms to do absolutely everything.

But we’re not talking about becoming a “gym bro.”

We’re talking about building capacity.

The stronger you are relative to the demands of riding, the less taxing those demands can become.

Think of it this way.

If a particular riding position or movement requires close to your maximum physical capacity, maintaining it lap after lap is going to be bloody hard.

Build more strength and suddenly that same task represents a smaller percentage of what you’re capable of.

That’s your reserve.
And the deeper you get into a moto, the more important that reserve becomes.

Endurance Keeps Your Technique Alive

Being fit for motocross isn’t just about being able to run 10km or sit on a pushbike for two hours.

Those things can certainly contribute to your aerobic fitness.

But motocross has its own demands.

You need the muscular endurance to repeatedly:

  • Absorb impacts
  • Grip and control the bike
  • Maintain your riding position
  • Stand through rough sections
  • Brake and accelerate
  • React to constantly changing terrain

At the same time, your cardiovascular system is working hard to keep everything going.

And there’s another piece riders sometimes forget:

Your brain is still trying to make good decisions while all of this is happening.

Which rut?

Inside or outside?

When do you brake?

Can you make that pass?

What’s happening with the rider in front?

When you’re physically exhausted, maintaining concentration and executing those decisions can become more difficult.

Fitness isn’t just about lasting longer.

It’s about maintaining the quality of your riding for longer.

Strength + Fitness = Better Riding Under Fatigue

This is where strength and conditioning work together.

Strength gives you a bigger physical reserve.

Fitness helps you sustain your effort and recover.

Muscular endurance helps you keep producing force repeatedly.

Put those together and the goal isn’t simply to make you good in the gym.

It’s to stop your riding falling apart when you’re tired.

Because being strong for one lap is one thing.

Being able to maintain your position, control and technique when the track is destroyed and you’re 20 minutes into a moto?

That’s what we’re actually training for.

The Best Suspension Upgrade? Your Body

Motocross riders will happily spend thousands on:

  • Suspension
  • Exhausts
  • Engine work
  • Wheels
  • Tyres
  • Bike setup

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Bike setup matters.

But then they’ll turn up to the track having done almost nothing to prepare the person actually riding it.

That’s a problem.

You can have an incredible bike underneath you, but if your legs are cooked, your forearms are pumped and your conditioning can’t match the length of the moto, you’re still going to struggle to get the best out of it.

So yes.

Get your suspension dialled.

Set the bike up properly.

Run good tyres.

But don’t forget about the biggest component controlling the bike.

You.

Train for the Demands of Motocross

Good motocross conditioning shouldn’t just be a random collection of gym exercises.

Your training needs to address the demands you’re actually facing on the bike.

Depending on the rider, that might include:

  • Lower-body strength
  • Trunk strength and endurance
  • Upper-body pulling and pushing strength
  • Grip and forearm capacity
  • Aerobic conditioning
  • High-intensity conditioning
  • Muscular endurance
  • Power
  • Recovery between motos

And most importantly?

It needs to progress.

Doing the same circuit every Tuesday night until the end of time isn’t a training plan.

We want to identify where your physical gaps are and build them.

The Bottom Line

Crashes in motocross can happen for plenty of reasons.

Track conditions.

Bike setup.

Rider error.

Other riders.

And sometimes plain old bad luck.

But fatigue is one factor you can actually prepare for.

If your strength and conditioning aren’t matching the demands of your riding, your ability to maintain technique, control and concentration can suffer as the moto goes on.

So stop treating your body like it’s separate from the bike.

It’s part of the build.

Fading Before the Chequered Flag?

If you’re strong for the first few laps but your riding falls apart as the moto goes on, let’s work out why.

At Fighting Fit, we can assess your strength, conditioning and physical capacity, identify where you’re losing performance and build a program around the actual demands of motocross.

Because the goal isn’t to make you better at gym.

It’s to make you a better rider when it matters.

👉 Book in with the Fighting Fit team and start building a body that can keep up with your bike.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Fighting Fit Physiotherapy is hands down the best physio I've encountered. Having tried multiple physios for various injuries, I always find myself coming back to them. Their expertise consistently exceeds expectations, helping me get back to my sport faster than I thought possible. Their personalized approach and attention to detail make all the difference. I could not recommend a better or more exceptional physio team!

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
