Ankle Injury? Here’s How Fighting Fit Gets You Back Stronger and More Confident

  • September 23, 2026
  • Karolina Bejmert

Rolled your ankle on the field?

Dealing with that frustrating ankle that has “never felt quite right” since you injured it?

Or recovering after surgery and wondering how you’ll know when you’re actually ready to get back to running, training or sport?

Ankle injuries are incredibly common.

But here’s where people often get caught out:

Pain disappearing doesn’t necessarily mean your ankle has fully recovered.

You might be walking around pain-free while still having deficits in strength, balance, power or your ability to absorb force.

And those things can be pretty hard to measure by simply looking at you.

That’s why at Fighting Fit Physiotherapy, we don’t just ask:

“How does it feel?”

We also test:

“What can it actually do?”

And that’s where objective testing comes in.

Why Objective Testing Matters in Ankle Rehab

Let’s say you’ve injured your right ankle.

A few weeks or months later, the swelling is gone.

You can walk normally.

Maybe you’ve even started running again.

Everything feels pretty good.

So are you ready to return to sport?

Maybe.

But we’d rather measure than guess.

Depending on your injury and goals, objective testing can help us assess things like:

  • Calf and ankle strength
  • Left-to-right differences
  • Balance and control
  • Jumping ability
  • Landing forces
  • Power production
  • Force absorption
  • Readiness for higher-level activity

That’s particularly useful when you’re trying to get back to something demanding like running, field sports or motocross.

Because feeling good is important.

But feeling good and being physically prepared aren’t always the same thing.

The VALD Advantage at Fighting Fit

At Fighting Fit, we have access to VALD Performance Technology to help assess and track your rehabilitation.

No, fancy equipment doesn’t magically fix your ankle.

You still have to do the work.

But it gives us useful information to help make decisions about your rehabilitation and progression.

Here’s some of the technology we may use.

🦶 ForceDecks — Dual Force Plates

Force plates allow us to measure what happens when you produce and absorb force.

Depending on where you are in rehab, we can assess tasks such as:

  • Jumping
  • Landing
  • Hopping
  • Squatting
  • Countermovement jumps
  • Repeated movements

This can help identify differences that aren’t always obvious to the naked eye.

You might look symmetrical when you land.

But are you producing the same force?

Are you absorbing load differently?

Are you unconsciously protecting the injured side?

The numbers can help tell the story.

💪 DynaMo — Strength Testing

How strong is your injured ankle?

Not:

“It feels pretty strong.”

We mean:

How strong is it actually?

Using objective strength testing, we can measure different movements around the ankle and compare them over time.

This gives us actual numbers to work with.

Instead of saying:

“Yep, looks stronger.”

we can see whether you’re actually progressing.

And for patients, seeing those numbers improve can be bloody motivating.

🔒 ForceFrame — Isometric Strength Testing

The ForceFrame gives us another way to objectively assess strength in controlled positions.

Depending on the injury, this can help us measure different muscle groups and identify areas that may still need work.

It can also be useful throughout different stages of rehabilitation.

Your Fighting Fit Physio can use that information early in your recovery, while your Exercise Physiologist can continue using objective measures as you move toward heavier strength training and performance.

Same data. Same goals. One rehab plan.

🦵 NordBord — Looking Beyond the Ankle

An ankle injury doesn’t mean we only assess your ankle.

If your goal is returning to running or sport, the rest of the leg matters too.

That can include your:

  • Calves
  • Hamstrings
  • Quads
  • Glutes
  • Overall lower-limb strength

Tools such as the NordBord can form part of a broader strength profile when it’s relevant to your rehabilitation and sporting demands.

Because getting back to sport isn’t just about having a pain-free ankle.

Your whole leg needs to be ready.

Pain-Free Isn't the Finish Line

This is probably the biggest message in this entire blog.

Pain-free does not automatically equal rehab-complete.

This is where plenty of ankle rehabilitation stops too early.

The pain settles.

The swelling disappears.

Walking feels normal.

So you think:

“Sweet. I’m good.”

Then you return to running, training or sport and suddenly realise the ankle still doesn’t trust quick changes of direction, jumping, landing or heavy loading.

Good rehabilitation should bridge that gap.

Depending on what you’re returning to, that might mean progressing through:

  • Mobility
  • Calf and ankle strength
  • Balance and proprioception
  • Heavy strength training
  • Running
  • Jumping and landing
  • Hopping
  • Change of direction
  • Sport-specific drills

And where appropriate, we can use objective testing throughout that process to see whether you’re actually building the capacity you need.

We Don't Test Just for the Sake of Testing

This is important.

Having access to cool technology doesn’t mean every ankle injury needs every test.

The numbers only matter if they help us answer a useful question.

What’s still missing?

Are you improving?

What should we progress next?

Are you physically prepared for what you’re returning to?

That’s why testing needs to be combined with a proper clinical assessment, your symptoms, your injury history and—most importantly—your goals.

If you’re trying to get back to walking the dog comfortably, your rehab should look different from someone preparing to return to competitive sport.

The testing needs to match the person.

Physio + Exercise Physiology: No Gap in the Middle

Another advantage at Fighting Fit is that rehabilitation doesn’t have to stop once the early injury settles.

Our Physiotherapists can help with the initial assessment, diagnosis and early stages of rehabilitation.

Then, when appropriate, our Exercise Physiologists can help progress strength, conditioning and performance.

And because we’re all working within the same team, your rehab doesn’t need to restart every time you progress to the next stage.

The goal is one continuous journey:

Injury → Rehab → Strength → Performance → Back doing what you love.

The Bottom Line

An ankle injury doesn’t have to mean months of guessing whether you’re ready.

And “it doesn’t hurt anymore” shouldn’t be the only test you have to pass.

At Fighting Fit, we combine clinical assessment, progressive rehabilitation and objective testing where appropriate to help answer the question that actually matters:

Is your ankle ready for what you’re asking it to do?

Because our goal isn’t simply to get you out of pain.

It’s to rebuild the strength, capacity and confidence you need to get back to work, training, running or sport.

Is Your Ankle Actually Ready?

If you’ve recently rolled your ankle, you’re recovering after surgery, or you’ve got one of those ankles that has “never been the same” since an old injury, let’s stop guessing.

At Fighting Fit Physiotherapy, we’ll assess where you’re at, identify what’s still missing and use objective testing where appropriate to guide your progression.

📍 Book an ankle assessment with the Fighting Fit team at Nerang and let’s find out what your ankle can actually do.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Fighting Fit Physiotherapy is hands down the best physio I've encountered. Having tried multiple physios for various injuries, I always find myself coming back to them. Their expertise consistently exceeds expectations, helping me get back to my sport faster than I thought possible. Their personalized approach and attention to detail make all the difference. I could not recommend a better or more exceptional physio team!

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
