Your Neck Pain Isn’t Bad Luck. Here’s the Truth About What Actually Works (Backed by Science)

  • September 16, 2026
  • Dean Phelps

Desk job? Long hours driving? Constantly looking at your phone?

Your neck deals with a lot.

And when that occasional stiffness turns into recurring pain, headaches or that annoying tight feeling across your shoulders, the usual response is pretty predictable.

Stretch it.

Massage it.

Change your pillow.

Fix your posture.

Buy a fancy ergonomic chair.

And when all else fails… take some pain relief and hope tomorrow is better.

But what if we could do more than just treat neck pain when it appears?

What if we could actually reduce the risk of it developing in the first place?

Research into neck pain prevention gives us a pretty clear place to start:

Exercise.

What Did the Research Find?

A systematic review and meta-analysis looked at randomised controlled trials investigating different strategies designed to prevent neck pain, rather than simply treat it once someone was already sore.

That’s an important distinction.

We’re not talking about:

“My neck hurts. How do I settle it?”

We’re asking:

“What can I do to reduce my chances of developing neck pain in the first place?”

And exercise came out looking pretty damn good.

General exercise showed benefits, while programs specifically targeting the neck and shoulders showed particularly promising results.

Education or ergonomic interventions on their own weren’t nearly as convincing.

Wait... So My Expensive Ergonomic Chair Won't Save Me?

Probably not by itself.

Does that mean your workstation doesn’t matter?

No.

If you’re uncomfortable at your desk, making sensible adjustments can absolutely make your working day more comfortable.

But expecting the perfect:

  • Chair
  • Desk height
  • Monitor position
  • Keyboard
  • Posture

to magically prevent neck pain?

That’s where we have a problem.

Your body isn’t designed to sit in one “perfect” position for eight hours.

The best posture is often your next posture.

Move.

Change positions.

And build enough physical capacity to tolerate the demands of your day.

Why Does Strength Matter?

Your neck and shoulders aren’t fragile structures that need to be protected from everything.

They’re designed to move and handle load.

And just like every other part of your body, they can adapt to training.

Strengthening can improve your ability to tolerate:

  • Long periods at a desk
  • Repetitive work
  • Driving
  • Gym training
  • Lifting
  • Sport
  • Everyday life

Instead of constantly trying to avoid stress on your neck, we want to build enough capacity to handle it.

Think about it like training for a run.

You don’t prepare for a 10km race by avoiding running.

You gradually build your body’s ability to tolerate the demand.

Your neck shouldn’t be treated any differently.

Who Needs to Listen Up?

Office workers who constantly finish the day with tight shoulders.

Drivers spending hours behind the wheel.

Lifters dealing with recurring neck and upper-back niggles.

Tradies working overhead.

Parents carrying kids around all day.

People who spend far too much time looking at their phones.

Basically…

If you have a neck, this applies to you.

“But I Stretch My Neck Every Day!”

Great.

If stretching feels good, there’s nothing wrong with doing it.

But if stretching is your entire neck-pain prevention strategy, we can probably do better.

Stretching may temporarily make an area feel looser or more comfortable.

But we also want your neck and shoulders to have the strength and capacity to tolerate what you’re asking them to do every day.

Don’t just make your neck feel good.

Train it to become more capable.

What About Massage?

Same story.

Massage can feel bloody fantastic when your neck is sore.

And yes, hands-on treatment can absolutely be useful as part of physiotherapy.

But if every few weeks you need another massage because the same symptoms keep returning, we need to ask a better question:

Why does your neck keep struggling with the demands you’re placing on it?

That’s where rehabilitation comes in.

Hands-on treatment can help settle things down.

Exercise helps us build things back up.

What Does Neck Strengthening Actually Look Like?

No, we’re not suggesting you strap a 20kg plate to your forehead tomorrow.

Neck strengthening can start very simply.

Depending on the person, we might work on:

  • Neck flexion and extension strength
  • Side-bending strength
  • Rotational control
  • Shoulder strength
  • Upper-back strength
  • Loaded carries
  • Rows and pulling movements
  • Endurance for work or sporting positions

Then we progressively make those exercises harder as your capacity improves.

Because doing the same three gentle exercises forever isn’t really progressive rehabilitation.

This Is Where Fighting Fit Does Things Differently

We’re not going to tell you:

“Your posture is terrible.”

Then massage your traps, hand you three stretches and send you back to the exact same life that irritated your neck in the first place.

We want to know:

  • What does your day actually involve?
  • How strong is your neck?
  • How strong are your shoulders?
  • What movements are you struggling with?
  • What happens when you’re tired?
  • What does your work, training or sport require from you?

Then we build from there.

Assess. Don’t guess.

The Bottom Line

If you want to reduce your risk of neck pain, don’t rely entirely on the perfect chair, endless stretching or waiting until something hurts before doing anything about it.

Exercise is one of the strongest tools we have.

And targeted training for the neck and shoulders deserves to be part of the conversation.

You don’t need an iron-clad neck.

You don’t need perfect posture.

You need a body that’s strong and capable enough to handle the things you ask it to do.

Want to Build a Stronger Neck Before It Becomes a Pain in the Neck?

Whether you’re already dealing with recurring neck pain or you simply want your body better prepared for work, training and everyday life, we can help.

At Fighting Fit Physiotherapy, we’ll assess what your neck actually needs and build a progressive program around you — not hand you another generic sheet of stretches.

👉 Book in with the Fighting Fit team and let’s build a neck that’s ready for what you throw at it.

You’ve got one neck. Make it a strong one.

I had a really bad shoulder and had been seeing a different physio for 3 months (from a different place) I got told Tyson was good. After just a few sessions the movement was coming back. I’m 66 and was worried I would have to stop surfing. But with a lot of help from Tyson I’m back in the waves ( thank you so so much)

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Fighting Fit Physiotherapy is hands down the best physio I've encountered. Having tried multiple physios for various injuries, I always find myself coming back to them. Their expertise consistently exceeds expectations, helping me get back to my sport faster than I thought possible. Their personalized approach and attention to detail make all the difference. I could not recommend a better or more exceptional physio team!

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
All in all it was a very holistic experience and I would highly recommend the service.
