Why DIY Programs don’t work for Motocross Athletes:

The rigors of motocross racing extend far beyond the adrenaline-fueled moments of competition.

To excel in this demanding sport, athletes must prioritize strength and conditioning training off the track. 

While some may be tempted to craft their own strength and/or conditioning programs, the complexities and unique demands of motocross racing necessitate the expertise of professionals in the field. 

In this blog, we’ll delve into the reasons why motocross athletes can’t simply rely on DIY strength programs and why investing in professional guidance is essential for their success.

You need to be specific and understand the science! 

  • Motocross is a physically demanding sport that requires specific strength, power, and endurance attributes. Crafting a strength program tailored to the demands of motocross racing requires an in-depth understanding of the sport’s biomechanics, movement patterns, and energy systems. Without this specialized knowledge, athletes risk neglecting key areas of performance enhancement. 
  • In fact, often when people do it themselves, or train under poor guidance the amount of time in the gym, on the cycle bike or pounding the pavement running is a complete waste of time. Often this leads them to think off-bike training doesn’t work or isn’t as important as on-bike training. But that isn;’t the case, they have just been doing the wrong stuff and created an unhelpful bias.

The right programs reduce the risk of injury!

  • Motocross racing poses inherent risks of injury due to high speeds, challenging terrain, and unpredictable conditions. A well-designed strength program can help mitigate these risks by addressing muscular imbalances, enhancing joint stability, and improving resilience to impact forces. 
  • However, without guidance, athletes may not be spending their time and energy on the correct programming that has been individually tailored to improve known and measurable weakness to reduce their risk. 
  • At Fighting Fit, our riders crash less, experience less niggles and over training related injuries, and bounce back way faster than their competitors. Investing in a S&C program returns you to the bike sooner and in better condition!

Focus on your bodies performance for motocross!

  • Maximizing performance in motocross racing often focuses heavily on the bike. Upgrading suspension, engine changes, top of the line ignition systems, tweaks to gearing and bike set up.  But your bike will only go as fast as the riders body can handle! There is no point having more power, if you can’t hold on and hold on for long periods of time.
  • Maximising your bodies performance requires a comprehensive approach to strength and conditioning. A periodized training programs that systematically address strength, power, agility, muscular endurance and strong energy systems.All of which are critical for success on the track. 
  • DIY programs will lack structure, progression, and the specific needs to achieve optimal performance gains. Even if you have been involved in the sport for years, there is always gains to be made, often you won’t see them!

Be Objective and Monitor:

  • Like you record lap times to understand where to gain on your competition. Utilizing objective measurements and monitoring tools to track physical progress, identify weaknesses, and adjust training protocols is where it is at these days. 
  • Spending time understanding your body, its strengths, weakness, movement patterns, and energy systems are performance metrics you can’t go without. 
  • Without access to these tools and expertise, riders will struggle to become athletes and will only go so far. You’ll never make the big time without structure!

Long Term Development:

  • Success in motocross racing is not just about short-term gains; it’s about long-term development and sustainability. By investing in professional guidance, motocross athletes can lay the foundation for a successful and enduring career in the sport. Not be beaten up by it!
  • While motocross athletes possess an undeniable passion and drive to succeed, the complexities of the sport necessitate the guidance of professionals in the realm of strength and conditioning. DIY strength programs may seem appealing, but they often fall short in addressing the unique demands of motocross and the athlete.

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

Kyle was knowledgeable, personable and professional. He saw me through my second pregnancy and continued to work with me until 6 months post partum on issues with my back. Would recommend anyone to go and see him.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
The personalised treatment and rehabilitation programs have produced excellent results and I have completed both programs pain free and feeling stronger than before my injuries.
During the program there was constant communication and follow up and they were very accommodating with my work schedule.
