More Than Just a Sprain

Why That “Minor” Ankle Roll Deserves a Second Look

Rolled your ankle playing footy? Landed awkwardly off a curb? Happens all the time,  on the field and in everyday life.

Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries we see in clinic. But here’s the kicker: just because it’s common doesn’t mean it’s no big deal.

Far too often, people skip seeing a physio, thinking it’ll “settle on its own.” And yeah,  sometimes it does. But when it doesn’t? You’re left wide open to long-term issues.


What Actually Happens With a Sprained Ankle?

Sure, the pain fades. But that’s not the full story. Even once it stops hurting, there’s often lingering damage under the surface:

  • Reduced balance and proprioception

  • Weakened ankle and lower limb strength

  • Limited range of motion

  • Incomplete tendon or ligament healing

If that’s not fully addressed, your ankle’s running on borrowed time.

In fact, up to 20% of people develop chronic ankle instability  meaning repeated sprains, ongoing swelling, pain, and that nasty “giving way” sensation.

The Good News? You Can Fix It.

Ankle injuries respond incredibly well to the right treatment. Getting a proper diagnosis and knowing the severity of your sprain helps shape your recovery plan:

  • When it’s safe to return to sport or full activity

  • What level of strength and balance training is needed

  • Whether you’ll benefit from taping or bracing

  • If further scans or specialist input are needed

  • How to prevent this from becoming a recurring injury

So What Type of Sprain Are We Talking?

Sprains are graded by severity, and the mechanism of injury gives us insight into which ligaments are affected.

🟢 Grade 1 (Mild):

Minimal swelling and tenderness. Ligament stretched but intact. Usually no major functional loss.

🟡 Grade 2 (Moderate):

Noticeable swelling, pain, and some loss of function. Often a partial tear involved. Expect reduced balance, range of motion, and some instability.

🔴 Grade 3 (Severe):

Complete ligament rupture. Significant swelling, bruising, and pain. You won’t be weight-bearing easily,  this one needs proper rehab and a longer timeline.

Your Non-Negotiables (aka What We Tell Every Client)

  1. Don’t brush off an ankle sprain. Even if it feels “okay,” get it assessed because early rehab = long-term protection.

  2. Pain-free doesn’t mean ready. Your balance, strength, and mobility need retraining after the pain’s gone.

  3. Rehab isn’t just rest. You need a structured plan, strength work, mobility drills, proprioception training, and yes, those bouncy plyometric movements.

  4. Returning to sport? Test it properly. No guesswork. We use performance-based criteria like hop tests, strength benchmarks, and stability checks to clear you.

Be AWARE they’ll immediately try to commit you to multiple follow up sessions after your initial consultation. This happened to me and then I later found out that as it just so happens, they have a cancellation policy that says you have to pay 100% of the consultation fee for cancelling. They failed to tell me this when they were pushy in committing me to 6 sessions after my consult, so that was a really nice little surprise.

I was already uncomfortable with how pushy they were in having me commit to so many sessions, so when I heard about the policy I just cancelled all together. So, I can’t speak further to the quality of their service throughout therapy phase. FYI this was also a few months ago now, it’s possible (though unlikely) they may have changed the policy. Just ask the question.

This is the second time I have been treated by the team at FFP.
As a health professional myself I have been impressed with the level of care I have received from all members of the team.
